HEART OF THE MATTER

John Papworth

It is clear that all of us involved in the Radical Consultation are very much concerned with the effects of the global crisis and endorse the work of Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace and so on.

But our distinctive pitch is that we are concerned with the fundamental causes of the crisis, which we see as a crisis of power no longer in peoples hands or...elections and voting rights and so on notwithstanding...not remotely within their reach.

Our analysis suggsts that petitioning governments and engaging in activities, however worthy their objectives, which implicitly accept the current maldistribution of power is most unlikely to have any serious effect.

The reason for setting up the Radical Consultation is to discuss and decide on forms of activity which will have a real impact.

I hear people repeatedly bewailing what they call a 'duplication of effort', and urging the need not to 'compete' but to 'cooperate', but where is this duplication or competition?
